Description
One of the most popular and easy-to-reach beaches on the north-east coast of England, Whitley Bay stretches for two miles of golden sand between St Mary’s Island and Lighthouse and Cullercoats. The area has plenty of restaurants, shops, and surfing. Canoeing and kayaking are also available. The promenade makes for an especially attractive walk, with views over the North Sea – although the wind blowing in from the sea can be bracing at certain times of the year.
The area is very popular with walkers, and there are plenty of other activities including nightlife in Whitley Bay itself and annual sandcastle competitions on the beach. The Links golfing area runs right behind the beach, and the Edwardian Spanish City has recently been relaunched with various dining options including fish and chips.
There is a lifeguard service at this beach, and while dogs are allowed on the beach to the north of Panama Gardens, there is a ban on dogs on the rest of the beach between 1 May to 30 September. Whitley Bay is easy to reach by car, bus, and the local Metro transit service. There is plenty of parking, although it can get very busy in high season.
