Description
The Original Blue Hole is a natural swimming site in St Ann Parish, about 20‑30 minutes outside Ocho Rios, in a community called Thatch Hill. It’s set in a lush tropical environment with forest, river pools, waterfalls, natural springs, rope swings, cliff‑jumps, and caves, offering a mix of adventure and relaxation. The water is a striking blue‑green, especially around midday, and there are spots where you can swim, jump from rocks or platforms, explore small underwater caves, or just chill in the pools. Guides are typically on hand to escort visitors through the more challenging parts and ensure safety.
The attraction is open daily, usually from morning (around 8:00 or 9:00 AM) until about 5:00 PM. Entrance fees vary depending on whether you’re a local resident or non‑resident; for non‑residents the cost tends to be in the ballpark of US$24‑25 for adults, less for children. The fee generally covers guided time at the pools, and for many of the water‑based activities (rope swing, waterfall jump, rock jump, etc.). Some extra costs (tips, life jackets, food and drink at the bar or eatery) are often extra. Time spent at the Blue Hole typically ranges from an hour to a few hours, depending on how much you want to swim, jump, explore or just relax.
For a smooth visit, bring swimwear, water shoes (since rocks and bottoms can be slippery), a towel, change of clothes, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Be aware that certain paths or climbs can be uneven and wet. Also, while the site is beautiful, it can get crowded during peak hours and midday, so arriving earlier is best if you want a quieter experience. Also, check whether a guide is required on entry (for safety and navigation), and whether life‑jackets are provided/included, especially if you’re not a strong swimmer.
