Description
The Old Contemptibles is a distinguished pub situated on Edmund Street in Birmingham's Colmore Business District, near Snow Hill Station. Established in the late 18th century as the Adelphi Wine Vaults, it was later known as the Albion Hotel in 1880. The current name was adopted in 1953 to honour the British Expeditionary Force of World War I, affectionately dubbed "The Old Contemptibles" by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The pub has recently undergone a significant refurbishment, enhancing its historic charm while introducing modern amenities.
Inside, the pub features a large, wood-panelled room divided into distinct drinking areas, including a cosy snug at the rear. The design retains elements from its Victorian heritage, with a long oak bar, marble fireplace, and leaded windows. The upstairs area, unused since the mid-1980s, has been transformed into 'The Expedition Room', suitable for meetings, dining, or functions. Downstairs, 'The Campaign Room' offers a warm and inviting space for gatherings.
The Old Contemptibles is renowned for its extensive selection of real ales, including Sharp's Doom Bar and St Austell Nicholson's Pale Ale, along with six rotating guest ales. The menu offers a variety of hearty British pub fare, such as pies, fish and chips, and specialty sausages. The pub is also known for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during peak hours on weeknights and the annual German Market season.
