Description
Teatro Cervantes, inaugurated on December 17, 1870, is Málaga's oldest and most prestigious theatre. Designed by architect Jerónimo Cuervo in an eclectic style, it replaced the earlier Teatro del Príncipe Alfonso, which had been destroyed by fire. The theatre's interior features a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with four levels: stalls, two tiers of boxes, and a gallery. Its ceiling boasts a 19 x 16.5-meter oil painting by Bernardo Ferrándiz and Antonio Muñoz Degrain, depicting 19th-century Málaga's industry, commerce, and port visita.malaga.eu.
After decades of decline, Teatro Cervantes was acquired by Málaga City Hall in 1984 and underwent a significant restoration, reopening in 1987. The renovation preserved its historical essence while upgrading facilities to modern standards. Today, the theatre has a seating capacity of 1,134 and serves as the main venue for the Málaga Film Festival, as well as hosting a diverse range of performances, including opera, ballet, jazz, and classical music teatrocervantes.es.
Located near Plaza de la Merced in Málaga's historic centre, Teatro Cervantes is easily accessible and remains a vital part of the city's cultural heritage. Its rich history and commitment to the arts make it a must-visit destination for theatre enthusiasts and visitors to Málaga alike.
