Description
The Marin Držić Theatre (Kazalište Marin Držić) is a historic and elegant venue located in the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, at Pred Dvorom 3. Built in 1865 during the Austrian period, it was originally named the Bonda Theatre after its founder. Over time, it was renamed in honour of Marin Držić, Dubrovnik’s renowned Renaissance playwright. The theatre seats approximately 350 people and features a classic interior with a parterre and three levels of private balconies. The ornate ceiling is adorned with artwork by famed painter Vlaho Bukovac.
The theatre’s programming is diverse, offering a mix of Croatian classics, works by Marin Držić, international plays, modern productions, and occasional dance or musical performances. Typically, there are between four to six premieres each year, alongside a robust calendar of returning and guest productions. The Marin Držić Theatre also plays a key role in the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival, contributing to the city’s rich cultural scene.
There is no strict dress code—smart-casual attire is common among attendees. It’s recommended to arrive early, especially for more popular performances, as the intimate size of the venue ensures that all seats offer a good view. Tickets are affordably priced and available for purchase in advance or at the theatre’s box office. With its historic charm and artistic significance, a visit to the Marin Držić Theatre offers both a cultural and visual experience in one of Dubrovnik’s most iconic settings.
