Description
Strand IJburg is located in Amsterdam Oost, on Strandeiland—the largest of the man-made IJburg islands—at Pampuslaan 505. It offers a relaxed, urban beach escape just a short tram ride from Amsterdam Centraal (via tram 26 to the IJburg stop). Situated along the IJmeer lake, the beach provides a scenic view over the water, with a distinctly open and breezy feel. Its location makes it a popular spot for both locals and visitors looking to enjoy a day by the water without leaving the city.
The beach itself is sandy, not pebbly, and designed for a variety of recreational activities. Visitors can swim (at their own risk), relax on the sand, or get active with beach volleyball, skating, and football. For watersports enthusiasts, there are facilities for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), surfing, and even wingfoiling, with lessons and rentals available from local surf schools. The beach also features a small shop, restaurant, and the Strandlokaal IJburg information centre, along with rental options for sunbeds and parasols.
Strand IJburg is open from May 1 to September 30, during which time the beach is supervised and amenities like toilets and showers are available. From April 1 to September 30, dogs are not permitted on the beach, but they’re allowed off-leash from October 1 to March 31 in designated areas. The beach is accessible to people with disabilities, including the availability of a beach wheelchair and accessible paths. With hammocks, a watertap, and other thoughtful touches, it offers an inclusive, comfortable beach experience for all.
