Description
Sloterplas Beach is located in the southwest of Amsterdam within the large green area of Sloterpark, alongside the Sloterplas lake. The beach sits near President Allendelaan, close to the café-restaurant Hotel Buiten, and is easily accessible by tram (lines 7 or 13), bike, or on foot. This urban beach offers a calm retreat from the city, with wide views across the artificial lake and a peaceful, natural vibe that draws both locals and visitors—especially during the warmer months.
The beach has a soft, sandy shoreline and is equipped with parasols, picnic tables, beach chairs, and a volleyball court, making it ideal for families and relaxed summer days. Swimming is popular here, though it’s at your own risk. The nearby Watersportcentrum Sloterplas provides rentals and lessons for a variety of water-based activities including stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), canoeing, sailing, and pedal boating. The wider park also features walking and cycling paths, outdoor fitness areas, a skate park, a petting zoo, and playgrounds, adding to the appeal for visitors of all ages.
While Sloterplas Beach is inviting, swimmers should be aware that the lake is not always monitored and lifeguards are not present. Water quality can vary—during hot summers, blue-green algae or bacterial contamination may lead to swimming advisories. The city has trialled ecological filtration methods like mussel farms to improve water clarity, but conditions can change quickly. Visitors are advised to check for posted warnings and arrive early on warm days, as the beach can become crowded. Despite these factors, it remains a beloved urban escape with a balance of nature and recreation.
