Description
Sanja Matsuri, one of Tokyo's most iconic and lively festivals, takes place annually over the third weekend of May at the historic Asakusa Shrine in the Asakusa district. This three-day Shinto festival celebrates the founders of Senso-ji Temple, honouring their spirits with parades, traditional performances, and religious ceremonies. The highlight is the procession of nearly 100 portable shrines (mikoshi), carried through the streets by locals in festival attire, creating an electric and joyous atmosphere. The event draws over a million visitors, both locals and tourists, making it one of the most popular festivals in Japan.
There is no formal dress code, but many attendees, including shrine bearers, wear happi coats, traditional festival garb, or casual clothing. Participation in carrying a mikoshi requires prior arrangement with the shrine's organizers. Admission to Sanja Matsuri is free, and the event is open to all ages, though it can get crowded and energetic, especially during the mikoshi processions. With its vibrant parades, traditional music, and community spirit, Sanja Matsuri offers a dynamic glimpse into Tokyo's cultural heritage and remains a must-experience event for anyone visiting the city in spring.
