Description

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is one of the largest and most influential modern and contemporary art museums in the United States. Founded in 1935, it was the first West Coast institution dedicated exclusively to modern art. Over the years, SFMOMA has built a vast collection of more than 36,000 works, spanning painting, sculpture, photography, design, media arts, and architecture, showcasing both renowned masters and emerging artists.

In 2016, SFMOMA underwent a major expansion designed by the architectural firm Snøhetta, which added 170,000 square feet of new and renovated gallery space, greatly enhancing the visitor experience. This expansion includes expansive public areas and innovative gallery layouts, making art more accessible and engaging. The museum’s blend of Mario Botta’s original building and the modern addition creates a striking architectural landmark in downtown San Francisco.

SFMOMA is also known for its dynamic programming, including major exhibitions, retrospectives, and educational initiatives. It offers free admission to visitors 18 and under, encouraging youth engagement with art. Notable recent exhibitions have included comprehensive retrospectives of influential artists like Ruth Asawa. With its rich collection and commitment to innovative displays, SFMOMA remains a vital cultural hub for art lovers from around the world.
