Description
Restaurante Jardim das Oliveiras is nestled in the hills above Monchique, surrounded by olive groves, eucalyptus, pine, and cork trees, offering a peaceful and scenic setting quite distinct from the Algarve coast. The restaurant is housed in a rustic old farmhouse with stone walls, wooden beams, fireplaces, and several cosy dining rooms. There is also a shaded terrace for outdoor dining during the warmer months and a garden playground with slides, swings, and hammock nets, making it family-friendly. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and on Sundays and national holidays, it serves only a midday meal.
The cuisine focuses on traditional regional mountain dishes known as “cozinha serrana.” You can expect slow-roasted meats cooked in a wood oven, smoked and cured sausages, local game, baked lamb or kid goat, and specialties like “cozido de couve à Monchique,” roast pork, and hare with beans. Starters typically include local presunto (ham), chouriço, cheeses, olives, and homemade bread. Desserts feature local treats such as chestnut mousse, fig or carob tart, and other sweets made from regional produce.
The atmosphere is warm, rustic, and relaxed — perfect for enjoying unhurried meals surrounded by nature. Due to its altitude, the temperature is cooler in summer and cosy in winter, enhanced by fireplaces inside. There’s no formal dress code; comfortable casual attire is ideal. The service is friendly and family-oriented, with generous portion sizes. Reservations are recommended during busy times or for dinner. Prices are moderate and reflect good value for the quality, portion sizes, and setting.
