Description
The Prytania Theatre, located at 5339 Prytania Street in Uptown New Orleans, is the city's oldest operating movie theater and the last single-screen cinema in Louisiana. Established in 1914, it began as an open-air venue before relocating to its current site in 1927 after a fire destroyed the original building. Over the decades, the theater has adapted to changing times, transitioning from silent films to talkies, and now features state-of-the-art 4K laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound systems, ensuring a modern viewing experience while preserving its historic charm.
Operated by the Brunet family, who have a longstanding history in New Orleans' cinema scene, the Prytania Theatre offers a diverse array of programming. Patrons can enjoy a mix of contemporary blockbusters, classic film screenings, and special events like the Overlook Film Festival. The theater also hosts unique experiences such as midnight showings of cult favorites like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," providing a nostalgic and engaging atmosphere for moviegoers.
In addition to its Uptown location, the Prytania Theatre has expanded to a second venue at Canal Place in downtown New Orleans. This nine-screen cinema continues the tradition of offering a curated selection of films, including recent releases like "Sinners," a locally shot blockbuster directed by Ryan Coogler. The expansion reflects the theater's commitment to providing quality cinematic experiences across the city, blending modern amenities with a rich historical legacy.
