Description

The Ponte Vecchio, or "Old Bridge," is a medieval stone arch bridge that spans the Arno River in central Florence. Rebuilt in 1345 after earlier versions were destroyed by floods, it features three low arches and is often credited to architects such as Taddeo Gaddi or Neri di Fioravanti. Uniquely, it was the only bridge in Florence not destroyed during World War II, reportedly spared because of its cultural and historical significance. In the 16th century, Duke Ferdinand I banned butchers and other merchants from operating there, replacing them with goldsmiths and jewellers—a tradition that continues today.

The bridge is lined with picturesque shops that seem to dangle over the water, selling jewellery, watches, and fine art. Above the shops runs the Vasari Corridor, a secretive passageway built in 1565 for the Medici family to travel between the Uffizi Gallery and the Pitti Palace without mingling with the public. At the centre of the bridge is a small viewing area with a bronze bust of Benvenuto Cellini, a renowned Renaissance goldsmith and sculptor, offering a scenic pause point amid the bustling foot traffic.

Access to Ponte Vecchio is completely free and open at all hours, as it serves as a public pedestrian walkway connecting Florence’s historic centre with the Oltrarno district. The bridge offers some of the most iconic views in the city, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light reflects beautifully off the river and buildings. Although restoration efforts are periodically underway to preserve its aging structure, the bridge remains a vibrant and timeless symbol of Florence’s history and charm.
