Description

The Pfalz Viewing Terrace in Basel, Switzerland, offers one of the most picturesque vantage points in the city. Situated behind the Basel Minster Cathedral, this elevated platform provides sweeping views of the Old Town, the winding Rhine River, and, on clear days, the distant borders where Switzerland, Germany, and France meet. The name "Pfalz" comes from the Latin "palatium," referring to the bishop’s residence that once stood nearby, highlighting the terrace’s historical significance.

Accessible year-round and free of charge, the terrace is a favourite spot for both locals and tourists. Visitors reach it by ascending from Marktplatz through narrow cobbled streets of the medieval city centre. The area features benches shaded by leafy trees, making it an ideal place to relax, read, or enjoy a packed lunch. While there are no facilities directly on the terrace, restrooms and cafés are available a short walk away.

The Pfalz Viewing Terrace is especially enchanting during sunrise and sunset, when the soft light casts a golden glow over the city and river. It is also a prime location during Basel’s Fasnacht carnival, where participants throw oranges and confetti from the terrace, creating a vibrant spectacle. Whether capturing photographs or simply soaking in the atmosphere, this spot offers a memorable experience of Basel’s charm and beauty.
