Description
Passeio das Tágides is a beautiful riverside promenade located in the Parque das Nações district of Lisbon, stretching along the northern edge of the Tagus River. This modern waterfront walkway offers a peaceful escape from the city's hustle, with cobblestone paths, pine-shaded benches, and open views across the wide river. The route runs between major landmarks like the Oceanarium and the Vasco da Gama Tower, with views of the iconic Vasco da Gama Bridge and the slow-moving cable cars overhead. Named after the Tágides—mythical river nymphs from Portuguese poetry—the promenade reflects Lisbon’s blend of art, nature, and modern urban planning.
Passeio das Tágides is free and open to the public at all times, functioning as a pedestrian-friendly public space. One of the highlights along the promenade is the Telecabine Lisboa cable car, which offers a gentle aerial ride above the waterfront for a small fee. While the boardwalk itself has no restrictions, the cable car operates seasonally, usually from spring to autumn, with specific opening hours depending on the time of year. Aside from the cable car, the walkway also features sculptures, open lawns, and wide spaces ideal for walking, jogging, or simply watching the boats drift along the Tagus.
The area surrounding the promenade was originally developed for the 1998 World Expo and has since become a symbol of Lisbon’s forward-looking spirit. Today, it remains a favourite among locals and tourists alike for its tranquil atmosphere, striking public art, and waterside charm. Whether you’re taking a relaxing stroll, enjoying a sunset view, or exploring Lisbon’s modern side, Passeio das Tágides offers a refreshing and memorable experience by the river.
