The Orpheum Theatre, located at 601 Smithe Street in downtown Vancouver, is a historic venue renowned for its architectural grandeur and cultural significance. Opened on November 8, 1927, the theatre was designed by architect Benjamin Marcus Priteca in the Spanish Baroque Revival style. Financed by Vancouver businessman Joseph Langer, it was one of Canada's largest and most opulent theatres of its time. In 1979, the Orpheum was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, recognizing its architectural and cultural importance.
The Orpheum features a domed auditorium with exquisite décor, sweeping staircases, and a seating capacity of 2,672. The venue has been meticulously preserved and renovated over the years to maintain its historic charm while accommodating modern performances. It is the permanent home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and hosts a variety of events, including concerts, film screenings, and community performances.
Beyond its role as a performance venue, the Orpheum is an integral part of Vancouver's cultural landscape. It is part of the Vancouver Civic Theatres group, which also includes the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse, and the ANNEX. The Orpheum continues to captivate audiences with its rich history, stunning architecture, and diverse programming.
