Description

The Olympia Theater, located in downtown Miami at 174 East Flagler Street, is a historic venue that opened in 1926 as a silent movie palace and vaudeville house. Designed by architect John Eberson in his signature "atmospheric" style, the theater features a Mediterranean Revival façade and an interior that evokes a walled Italian garden, complete with a hand-painted ceiling adorned with twinkling stars and a peacock perched on a golden balcony. This unique design is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of early 20th-century theater architecture.

In 1975, philanthropist Maurice Gusman purchased the aging theater and adjacent office building, preventing their demolition. He donated the complex to the City of Miami, which led to extensive restorations overseen by renowned architect Morris Lapidus. These efforts preserved the theatre's historic charm while updating its facilities. In recognition of its architectural and cultural significance, the Olympia Theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Today, the Olympia Theater, also known as the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, hosts a diverse array of events, including live performances, films, community events, and corporate meetings. It continues to be a cherished cultural landmark in Miami, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's rich artistic heritage.
