Museu Municipal de Faro, established in 1894, is situated in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, a 16th-century Renaissance-style building in Faro, Algarve, Portugal. The museum showcases the region's history through permanent exhibitions of archaeology, religious painting from the 16th to 19th centuries, and 20th-century art. Notable exhibits include the 3rd-century Roman "Mosaic of the Ocean," Islamic domestic artifacts from the 9th to 13th centuries, and works by local artist Carlos Filipe Porfírio depicting Faro's legends.
The museum operates with varying hours depending on the season. From September 1st to July 14th, it is open Tuesday from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM, and Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last entrance 30 minutes before closing. From July 15th to August 31st, the museum extends its hours, opening Tuesday from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM, and Wednesday to Sunday from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with the last entrance 30 minutes before closing. The museum is closed on Mondays and national public holidays. Admission is free on Sundays for Portuguese nationals and residents.
