Description
Marwell Zoo, also known as Marwell Wildlife, is a 140-acre zoological park situated near Winchester, approximately 12 miles from Southampton. Established in 1972 on the historic Marwell Hall estate, the zoo has a strong focus on conservation and has become an important centre for breeding endangered species. Its large, scenic grounds provide a peaceful setting for both animals and visitors, with a strong emphasis on education, sustainability, and global biodiversity.
The zoo features a wide range of themed habitats, including African Valley, Aridlands, Roof of the World, Tropical House, Lemur Loop, Penguin Cove, and more. Highlights include Rothschild’s giraffes, Amur tigers, snow leopards, Grevy’s zebras, Humboldt penguins, white rhinos, red pandas, and ring-tailed lemurs. One of the standout attractions is the Tropical House, where guests walk through a rainforest environment filled with free-roaming sloths, birds, frogs, and fish, while also learning about climate conservation and sustainable energy use.
Admission to Marwell Zoo requires a ticket, with online booking recommended—especially during weekends and school holidays. The zoo is open daily from 10 am, with closing hours varying seasonally. Visitors can enjoy on-site facilities such as cafés, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a road-train service to help navigate the large grounds. Seasonal events like dinosaur trails and evening light displays also enhance the experience, making Marwell a top family-friendly attraction that blends wildlife viewing with education and environmental awareness.
