Description

La Mercè is Barcelona's largest and most anticipated annual festival, celebrated in honour of the city's patron saint, Our Lady of Mercy (La Mare de Déu de la Mercè). Held every September 24th, the festival usually spans several days, starting in the middle of the month, and brings a vibrant mix of cultural traditions, music, and public celebrations. The event is free to attend, with many activities such as parades, concerts, and public performances open to the public. It is one of the highlights of Barcelona's cultural calendar, attracting both locals and visitors from around the world to experience the city's festive atmosphere.

La Mercè is known for its unique blend of traditional Catalan customs and contemporary arts, with numerous performances and activities taking place throughout the city. Key events include the castells (human towers), a UNESCO recognized tradition, where teams of people build impressive towers of humans in the city's plazas. The festival also features the correfoc, a fiery street procession with participants dressed as devils and setting off fireworks, and the parades of giants, where large, ornate puppets depicting historical figures and mythical creatures march through the streets. Additionally, there are music concerts, street performances, theatre shows, and dance events, catering to all tastes. The festival culminates in a grand fireworks display over the Port Vell area, lighting up the night sky in a spectacular finale.

La Mercè is a family-friendly event, with activities designed for all ages. Most of the celebrations take place in central locations such as Plaza de Catalunya, La Rambla, and Parc de la Ciutadella, with festivities beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the night. While some specific performances or events may require tickets, much of the festival is open to the public at no cost. La Mercè offers an exciting opportunity to experience the spirit of Catalonia, blending ancient traditions with modern celebrations in the heart of Barcelona. Whether you're looking to marvel at human towers, dance to live music, or simply immerse yourself in the city's lively culture, La Mercè is an unforgettable festival that showcases the best of Barcelona's vibrant spirit.
