Description
Calle Larios, officially known as Calle Marqués de Larios, is Málaga's most iconic shopping street, stretching approximately 300 meters from Plaza de la Constitución to Alameda Principal. Inaugurated in 1891, it was part of a broader urban modernization initiative aimed at improving public health and connecting the historic centre to the port. The project was financed by the influential Larios family, with the street named in honour of Manuel Domingo Larios y Larios, the second Marquess of Larios. Designed by architect José María Sancha, the street features neoclassical architecture with rounded corners and symmetrical facades, inspired by European boulevards like those in Paris and Chicago.
Today, Calle Larios is a pedestrianized thoroughfare renowned for its upscale boutiques, international fashion brands, and traditional Andalusian shops. It serves as the commercial and cultural heart of Málaga, hosting events such as Málaga Fashion Week, the Málaga Fair, and the city's renowned Christmas light displays. The street's elegant design and vibrant atmosphere make it a favourite destination for both locals and visitors.
Calle Larios is also a hub for cultural events and festivals. During the Málaga Fair in August, the street is adorned with lights and decorations, creating a festive atmosphere. At Christmas, it becomes a spectacle of LED lights, attracting visitors from all over Spain. The street's central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring nearby attractions such as the Picasso Museum, the Cathedral of Málaga, and the Alcazaba.
