The archaeological site of Kerameikos lies to the northwest of Athens’ Acropolis, just off the lively Ermou Street. Once the district of Athens’ potters—hence the name derived from the Greek word “keramos” meaning ceramic—it later became the city’s most significant burial ground, in use from around 1200 BC through Roman times. Excavations have uncovered remarkable structures such as the Sacred Gate and Dipylon Gate, sections of the ancient city walls, the Pompeion (a public building for festival preparations), and the “Street of Tombs,” where prominent citizens, including generals and statesmen, were buried in elaborate graves.

Visitors can enter Kerameikos from 148 Ermou Street, easily accessible from Monastiraki, Thissio, or Kerameikos metro stations. The site is open daily except Mondays and major public holidays. During the summer, it usually operates from 8 AM to around 8 PM, with last entry about 30–90 minutes before closing, depending on the season. In winter, it typically closes by 3 PM. Entry costs about €8 in summer and €4 in winter, with reduced rates for EU seniors and free entry for EU citizens under 25, young children, and visitors with disabilities and their companions. A €30 combination ticket that includes Kerameikos and other major sites like the Acropolis and Ancient Agora may still be available but should be confirmed in advance, as availability can change.

Kerameikos offers a quieter, more reflective experience than some of Athens’ more crowded archaeological attractions. Visitors can explore ancient gravestones, sculptures, and pathways surrounded by greenery, with the on-site Archaeological Museum displaying many original artifacts recovered from the tombs, including vases, inscriptions, toys, and jewellery. The remains of the Dipylon and Sacred Gates mark starting points for major ancient religious processions, providing insight into the civic and ceremonial life of ancient Athens. It’s advisable to wear comfortable shoes, carry water and sun protection, and allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours for a full visit, especially if including the museum or nearby historical sites like the Ancient Agora and Technopolis in Gazi.
