Description

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, located in Glasgow's West End, is one of Scotland's most popular cultural attractions. Opened in 1901 and housed in a stunning Spanish Baroque-style building, the museum underwent a major refurbishment in 2006, reopening after a £28 million restoration. Today, it houses over 8,000 objects across 22 themed galleries, making it one of Europe's great civic art collections. The museum's diverse collections encompass natural history, arms and armour, art from various movements and periods, and much more.

Among the museum's highlights is Salvador Dalí's Christ of St John of the Cross, a masterpiece that draws visitors from around the world. Other notable exhibits include the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists, as well as a vast collection of European Old Masters, Impressionist works by artists like Monet and Van Gogh, and a significant collection of arms and armour . The museum also offers a range of family-friendly activities, including the "Discover - Make and Create" sessions, which provide hands-on experiences for children and adults alike .

In addition to its permanent collections, Kelvingrove hosts a variety of events and exhibitions throughout the year. Upcoming events include "Kelvingrove Bites: A Case Study of Sir Walter Scott" on August 15, 2025, and "Taming Nature – The Flora and Fauna of the Glasgow Style" on September 17, 2025 . The museum's daily organ recitals, performed on the original 1901 organ, are a cherished tradition, with performances by dedicated organists like Bill Hutcheson, who has been playing at Kelvingrove since 1969 .
