Description
Jackson Park Golf Course is a historic 18-hole public course located at 6401 S. Stony Island Ave in Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side. Designed by Tom Bendelow and opened in 1899 on grounds that once hosted the 1893 World’s Fair, it was the first public golf course west of the Alleghenies. The par‑70 layout spans 5,508 yards, winding through mature hardwood trees with long par 5s and challenging par 3s that demand accuracy. With large greens, bent‐grass surfaces, and a 36‑station driving range, it offers full practice facilities, a putting green, and PGA‑led instruction.
Green fees are kept affordable by the Chicago Park District. For 18 holes, weekday walking is $37, weekend walking $40; Advantage Card holders pay less ($32 weekday, $35 weekend). Twilight rates and junior/senior discounts are also available. Club rentals are $20, power carts $19 (or $16 for seniors), pull carts $5, and range buckets cost between $9 and $14 depending on size. Kids under 17 play free with a paying adult at all times, and can play even without adult accompaniment during certain hours. The course is managed by Indigo Golf Partners under the Park District, recently celebrating its 125th anniversary and hosting notable tournaments like the Chicago City Amateur.
Tee times can be booked online or by phone; walk‑ups are welcome but may pay higher rates. The course is accessible via several CTA bus routes, and while there’s no club storage on‑site, players sometimes bring equipment via public transit. It can get busy during weekends and evenings—weekday mornings or off‑peak times are best for a quieter round. The neighborhood atmosphere reflects its urban setting, and while appreciated for its affordability and history, visitors should stay aware of their surroundings, as some players report nearby sirens and occasional safety concerns. With its rich heritage, scenic lake‑adjacent location, and inclusive pricing, Jackson Park is a gem for holiday golfers seeking an authentic Chicago experience.
