Description
Ilha das Aves is a mini‑zoo and bird park in Madeira, in the parish of Campanário, Ribeira Brava. It sits in a beautifully landscaped garden covering about 7,000 m², and showcases over 200 to 300 exotic birds of around 40 species. You’ll see macaws, parrots, cockatoos, toucans, scarlet ibises, grey‑crowned cranes, pelicans, plus ponds with swans, flamingos and carp. There’s also a café/restaurant, a souvenir shop, tropical gardens, a children’s playground, and scenic views over the Atlantic.
You’ll probably need at least 90 minutes to explore the whole park comfortably — walking around the gardens, seeing the birds, stopping for photos or food, allowing time for the “Paco the macaw” show (the park mascot who does flying displays). The park is open daily; summer hours are roughly 10:00 to 19:00 (last entry about 18:00), winter hours a little shorter, for example 10:00 to 17:00 (last in about 16:00).
Entry costs are approximately €7.50 for adults, €5 for children aged 3‑12, and free for under‑3s. There’s also a family ticket option. The site is wheelchair‑accessible. It’s a good idea to bring sun protection and water, wear comfortable walking shoes, especially since parts are outdoors in a garden setting. Also useful: check opening times in advance; restaurants may close earlier than the park.
