Description
Ibiza Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Virgin of the Snows, is located at the highest point of Dalt Vila, the historic old town of Ibiza. Its origins date back to 1235 after the Catalan conquest of the island. Built on the site of a former mosque, the cathedral was constructed in the 14th century in a Catalan Gothic style and later underwent Baroque renovations in the 18th century. It became the cathedral of the Diocese of Ibiza in 1782.
The architecture is a blend of Gothic and Baroque elements, featuring a single nave with 14 side chapels and a polygonal apse. The notable Gothic bell tower offers panoramic views of Ibiza Town and the Mediterranean Sea. Inside, visitors can admire religious artworks, including 14th-century Gothic paintings and a 16th-century altarpiece.
The cathedral is open to visitors from April to October, with Mass held on Sundays at 10:30 AM. Admission is free, and it is located at Plaça de la Catedral in Ibiza Town. Visitors should be aware that restoration work is currently underway, including repairs to stained glass windows and structural elements.
