Description
Houhai Lake sits in the historic Shichahai district of central Beijing, near the iconic Drum and Bell Towers. This tranquil lake, once part of an imperial waterway system, is now a vibrant area surrounded by traditional hutongs (alleyways), courtyard homes, teahouses, cafes, and bars. Not far away lies Beihai Park, one of the oldest and best-preserved imperial gardens in China, located just northwest of the Forbidden City. The park spans about 71 hectares and features a large lake, the famous White Dagoba on Jade Flower Island, and classic Chinese pavilions and walkways that date back to the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.
These two destinations are excellent for families and travellers of all ages. At Houhai, children can enjoy paddle boating across the lake or taking rickshaw rides through the nearby hutongs. It’s an ideal place for a leisurely walk, feeding the fish, or stopping for snacks along the water’s edge. Meanwhile, Beihai Park offers lush landscapes, peaceful paths, and opportunities for kids to spot colourful dragon sculptures, explore historical buildings, and even watch artists practicing calligraphy or tai chi. The wide paths make it relatively stroller-friendly, though a few areas do have steps or uneven surfaces.
Entrance to Beihai Park is very affordable. In peak season (April to October), a basic ticket costs around CNY 10, with a full-access ticket (including the temple and special sites) priced at about CNY 20. During the off-season (November to March), these prices are reduced. The park generally opens from early morning until evening, depending on the season. Houhai itself is free to visit, with optional costs for boat rentals—ranging from CNY 120 to 280 per hour depending on the boat type, plus a refundable deposit. Whether you're looking for history, peaceful scenery, or lively local flavour, combining Beihai Park and Houhai Lake makes for a well-rounded day in Beijing.
