Description
Gatorland's Bird Rookery in Orlando is a remarkable natural sanctuary where wading birds nest safely above a breeding marsh inhabited by alligators. The alligators act as natural protectors, deterring predators such as raccoons and snakes, allowing the birds to raise their young in peace. This unique coexistence makes Gatorland’s rookery one of the most accessible and productive bird-watching spots in Central Florida.
The rookery is home to over a dozen bird species, including Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Anhingas, Cormorants, Wood Storks, and occasionally Roseate Spoonbills. These birds nest in trees and shrubs along the boardwalk, offering visitors close-up views of their nesting behaviours. The nesting season runs from January to August, with peak activity typically between April and June, making it an ideal time to visit.
For photography enthusiasts, Gatorland offers a special Photography Pass that grants early morning access to the rookery before the park opens to the public. This allows for capturing the birds in the soft, golden light of dawn. The park also features a three-story observation tower and a winding boardwalk, providing elevated and unobstructed views of the birds. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or simply looking for a peaceful outdoor experience, Gatorland’s Bird Rookery offers a rare and intimate glimpse into Florida’s native wildlife.
