Description
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, affectionately known as “The Durian” due to its distinctive twin-shell design, is Singapore's national performing arts centre. Officially opened on October 12, 2002, it stands on reclaimed land along the Marina Bay waterfront, near the mouth of the Singapore River. This iconic venue was conceived to nurture a vibrant arts scene and has since become a cornerstone of Singapore’s cultural identity.
The Esplanade houses multiple performance spaces, including a 1,600-seat Concert Hall, a 2,000-seat Theatre, and smaller venues like the Recital Studio and Theatre Studio. These spaces host a diverse array of performances, from classical music and contemporary theatre to dance and multidisciplinary arts. In addition to its performance venues, the complex features art installations, a library, retail units, restaurants, and cafes, making it a dynamic cultural hub.
Beyond its architectural grandeur, the Esplanade plays a pivotal role in Singapore's cultural landscape by supporting local artists and presenting international acts. It offers year-round programs and free outdoor performances, ensuring accessibility to the arts for all. As one of the world's busiest arts venues, the Esplanade continues to enrich the cultural fabric of Singapore and serves as a beacon for the performing arts in Southeast Asia.
