Description
The El Rey Archaeological Zone is a hidden gem located in the heart of Cancún’s Hotel Zone, offering visitors a chance to explore ancient Maya civilization without leaving the city. Situated at kilometre 18 on Kukulcán Boulevard, the site is easily accessible by taxi, public bus, or on foot from nearby hotels. Its close proximity to Playa Delfines makes it an ideal cultural stop after a day at the beach.
Though modest in size, El Rey features over 40 structures including pyramids, temples, and tombs dating back to the Late Postclassic period (around 1200–1550 AD). The site is also home to various wildlife such as iguanas and other reptiles that roam freely among the ruins, creating a peaceful blend of history and nature. This makes El Rey a more serene and less crowded alternative to other archaeological sites in the region.
The site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM. Admission costs around 75 MXN pesos (about $4 USD), and Mexican citizens and residents can enter free on Sundays with valid ID. Children under 13 and seniors may also qualify for discounted or free entry. Photography enthusiasts should note that a permit fee applies for professional camera equipment. El Rey offers an affordable and enriching experience for those looking to combine culture, history, and nature during their visit to Cancún.
