Description
The Drama Centre in Singapore is a distinguished performing arts venue situated on the third floor of the National Library Building at 100 Victoria Street. Originally established in 1955 at Fort Canning Park as the Cultural Centre, it was renamed the Drama Centre in 1980. The venue has played a pivotal role in Singapore's theatre scene, hosting landmark productions such as Army Daze, Lao Jiu, and Mail Order Brides. In 2002, the centre closed for redevelopment and reopened in its current location in 2005, aligning with the National Library's vision to foster a vibrant cultural precinct.
The Drama Centre comprises two main performance spaces: a 615-seat proscenium theatre and a 120-seat black box theatre. The proscenium theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art lighting, rigging, and sound systems, including a liftable orchestra pit that extends the stage when needed. This configuration makes it ideal for mid-sized theatrical productions, talks, and exhibitions. Additionally, the centre features a VIP lounge and function rooms, enhancing its capacity to host a variety of events.
Managed by Arts House Limited (AHL), the Drama Centre contributes to Singapore's dynamic arts landscape. AHL also oversees other cultural venues such as The Arts House and Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall, and organizes major events like the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) and the Singapore Writers Festival. The Drama Centre's strategic location within the National Library Building fosters a synergy between arts, education, and commerce, enriching the cultural fabric of Singapore.
