Description

Cine Albéniz, located on Calle Alcazabilla in Málaga's historic center, is a landmark cinema with a rich history. Designed by architect José González Edo in 1945, the building showcases a historicist style reminiscent of Californian movie theaters. It opened its doors on September 5, 1945, with a performance of the operetta "Luna de Miel en El Cairo," and began film screenings shortly thereafter. Over the decades, Cine Albéniz became a cultural hub, hosting exclusive premieres of films like "Gone with the Wind" and "Ben-Hur" during its golden era in the 1960s and 70s.

In 2008, the City Council of Málaga acquired the cinema, integrating it into the city's cultural framework. After renovations, it reopened in 2010, coinciding with the 13th Málaga Spanish Film Festival. Today, Cine Albéniz is managed by the Málaga Film Festival and serves as a venue for the Municipal Cinematheque, offering a diverse program that includes Spanish, European, and Latin American films, as well as foreign films in their original languages with Spanish subtitles.

With four screening rooms and a total capacity of 725 seats, Cine Albéniz is equipped with modern technology, including 3D projection and satellite connections for live broadcasts of operas and concerts. Its central location near landmarks like the Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba makes it a prominent cultural site in Málaga. The cinema continues to play a vital role in the city's cultural life, hosting events such as the Málaga Film Festival and the French Film Festival.
