Description
The Church of Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most famous and visually striking landmarks in Mykonos, located in the historic neighbourhood of Kastro near the old town (Chora). Its name means “Our Lady of the Side Gate,” as it was originally built next to the entrance gate of the old castle walls. The church is actually a complex of five small churches merged into one unique architectural structure, famous for its asymmetrical, whitewashed walls and smooth, organic shapes that give it a surreal, almost sculptural appearance.
Constructed over several centuries, starting in the 14th century and completed in the 17th century, Panagia Paraportiani reflects a blend of Byzantine and Cycladic architectural styles. The design stands out for its simplicity and purity, characteristic of traditional Cycladic churches, but also its unconventional form which has inspired artists and photographers worldwide. This church is a cultural symbol of Mykonos and often regarded as one of the most photographed sites on the island.
Visitors can explore the church grounds freely without any entry fee, making it an accessible attraction for everyone. While the interior is modest and typically closed to tourists due to preservation efforts, the exterior itself offers plenty to admire and photograph. It’s best to visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the beautiful soft light on its pristine white walls. The church’s serene setting and historic charm make it a must-see for anyone interested in Mykonos’ spiritual heritage and stunning architecture.
