Description
Cayo Arena, also known as Paradise Island, is a small sandbar located off the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, near the town of Punta Rucia. Renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, it offers an exceptional snorkelling experience. The shallow waters, starting at just five meters deep, are teeming with marine life, including schools of tropical fish such as surgeonfish, sergeant majors, damselfish, angelfish, and yellowtail snappers.
Access to Cayo Arena is typically via boat from Punta Rucia. Excursions often include a scenic boat ride through mangrove channels, where visitors may spot manatees in their natural habitat. Upon reaching the island, guests can enjoy snorkelling, relax under thatched-roof huts, or simply take in the breath-taking surroundings. Some tours also offer a visit to a natural pool in the ocean, providing a unique opportunity to cool off in shallow, clear waters.
Given its remote location, it's advisable to book tours in advance. Excursions typically last around 8 hours, including transportation from nearby resorts. Visitors are encouraged to bring reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching the coral or marine life to help preserve the delicate ecosystem.
