Description
The Castle of the Knights, also known as the Castle of Neratzia, is a prominent medieval fortress located at the entrance of Kos Town’s harbour, right next to the bridge that connects it to the city. Built by the Knights of St. John between the late 14th and 16th centuries, it served as a defensive stronghold against Ottoman invasions and pirate attacks. Its strategic position gave it control over the harbour and offered protection to the island during times of conflict.
The castle is made of large, carved limestone blocks, many of which were repurposed from ancient Greek and Roman structures, giving the walls a unique layered appearance. Inside, visitors can explore a network of towers, battlements, vaulted corridors, and a stone bridge that once connected the outer and inner sections. Carvings of coats of arms, Latin inscriptions, and military emblems are still visible on the walls, offering a glimpse into the legacy of the Knights and their role in Aegean history.
The Castle of the Knights is open to visitors most days of the week for a small admission fee. It’s a short walk from Kos Town’s main square and is often included in walking tours of the city. The site offers scenic views of the harbor and nearby Bodrum in Turkey, especially from the higher ramparts. While the castle is partially in ruins due to earthquakes and time, it remains one of the island’s most impressive historical landmarks and is ideal for those interested in medieval architecture and the history of the Crusader knights in the Dodecanese.
