Description
Castelo de São Jorge is a grand castle perched on one of Lisbon’s highest hills, in the historic Alfama district. Originally built in the 11th century by the Moors and later captured by King Afonso Henriques in 1147, the castle has served as a fortress, royal palace, and now a museum. It’s an exciting destination for kids, who can explore its ancient walls, climb up the towers, and spot colourful peacocks in the gardens. The castle offers stunning views over the city, making it feel like a real-life adventure into the past.
The castle is open nearly every day of the year, with extended summer hours from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and shorter winter hours from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It only closes on a few major holidays like January 1st and December 25th. Families can take part in guided tours and visit the Camera Obscura in the Tower of Ulysses, a special attraction that gives a magical, 360° real-time view of Lisbon—something kids usually find fascinating and fun.
Admission is free for children up to 12 years old, making it a great value for families. Tickets cost €15 for adults, €7.50 for teens and young adults aged 13 to 25, and €12.50 for seniors. Discounts are also available for people with disabilities and local residents. Reaching the castle can be part of the fun too—families can take the famous tram 28 or walk up through Alfama’s cobbled streets, turning the journey into an adventure. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended!
