Description
Casa Museo del Campesino is a cultural tribute to the traditional rural life and craftsmanship of Lanzarote, located in the village of San Bartolomé. Conceived by the island’s famed artist César Manrique, this museum was built to honour the resilience and ingenuity of Lanzarote’s farmers, who adapted to the island’s volcanic landscape. The centrepiece of the museum is a striking monument, the "Fertility Monument" (Monumento a la Fecundidad), a towering sculpture created by Manrique from old water tanks and boat parts, symbolizing the creative spirit of the island’s people.
The Casa Museo is a beautifully preserved farmhouse showcasing traditional Lanzarotean architecture, with whitewashed walls and green wooden doors. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits on local farming techniques, winemaking, and the creation of artisanal crafts such as pottery, basket weaving, and textiles. The museum also features live demonstrations of these crafts, giving visitors a first hand look at how these time-honoured techniques are passed down through generations. There’s also a restaurant serving traditional Canarian dishes, allowing guests to taste the local flavours of Lanzarote.
Tourists visiting the Casa Museo del Campesino gain deep insight into the island’s agricultural heritage and cultural identity. It’s an essential stop for those interested in Lanzarote’s history, offering an immersive experience of rural life and the artistry of its people. The museum also provides a serene setting to appreciate how César Manrique’s vision connected Lanzarote’s natural beauty with its human legacy, making it a must-see cultural landmark.
