Description
Art Space Santorini is a hybrid concept that combines a restored 1861 winery with a unique art gallery and museum experience carved into Santorini’s volcanic pumice rock in the village of Exo Gonia. Since its restoration in 1999, the old wine cellars, distillery chambers, and rock-hewn spaces became a contemporary platform for visual art while preserving the island’s winemaking legacy. The atmosphere is intimate and evocative—you enter through wooden doors into dimly lit underground halls that feel both organic and mysterious.
Within the cavern-like exhibition space—spanning the old kanaves, rakidio, and hyposkafo areas—Art Space showcases a well-curated mix of contemporary works by both Greek and international artists. Paintings and sculptures are the focus, selected primarily for artistic merit rather than commercial appeal. In parallel, it remains an operating winery producing acclaimed labels such as Vinsanto, Nychteri, and Saint August, offering visitors the chance to taste local wines in the midst of an artistic setting.
Visitors often describe a sense of fellowship and creative communion when exploring Art Space. Many reviews highlight the warm hospitality and the seamless fusion of wine‑tasting and art‑viewing in an off‑the‑beat‑track setting away from typical tourist crowds. Tripadvisor guests frequently praise guides like Esmeralda for friendly tours and the overall quality of both artwork and wines—one reviewer called it “one of the oldest and smallest winery[s]… amazing experience”. Open daily from late morning until sunset, visits are by appointment, ensuring a thoughtful, relaxed, and personal experience.
