Description

Perched atop a hill overlooking the modern city, the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella—often referred to as the original “Ancient Agadir”—is a 16th‑century fortress built by the Saadian sultan to defend against Portuguese invasions. Though much of the site was destroyed in the 1960 earthquake, parts of the outer walls and historical foundations remain. Recently restored and reopened to the public, the site features archaeological areas, interpretive signs, and scenic walkways. Located about 236 meters above sea level, it offers panoramic views of Agadir’s coastline, port, and urban sprawl, making it a favourite spot for photographers, history buffs, and sunset seekers alike.

A visit to Agadir Oufella combines cultural heritage with breath-taking landscapes. The site gives a rare glimpse into Morocco’s colonial past while offering a peaceful escape from the city. Entry is reasonably priced (around 40 dirhams per adult), and visitors can reach the top via a winding drive, a walking path, or a modern cable car system that offers a quick and scenic ascent. While the kasbah does not typically host live performances, nearby attractions like La Médina d’Agadir—a recreated traditional Berber town—feature artisan workshops, handmade crafts, and traditional food, adding depth to the cultural experience.

Though the original city centre was lost in the 1960 earthquake, Agadir’s modern Souk El Had remains a vibrant hub of local life. Spanning more than 6,000 stalls, the market is a sensory feast of spices, textiles, and Moroccan goods, and often includes live music or artisan demonstrations. Comfortable footwear, early arrival, and carrying small amounts of cash are recommended for visitors. For those interested in deeper Berber heritage, day trips to the ancient granaries of Amtoudi—known as "agadirs"—reveal the architectural origins that gave the city its name, offering another layer of historical exploration in the region.
