Description
Roman Beach (Római-parti Plázs) is a scenic stretch of riverside along the Danube in Budapest’s 3rd District, known for its relaxed, local atmosphere. The area blends leafy promenades, bike paths, and riverside eateries with a nostalgic, summer vibe. It’s long been popular for boating, kayaking, fishing, and casual walks under the trees, with an iconic row of food stalls offering fried fish, lángos, and cold drinks.
During the summer months, part of the riverside is transformed into Budapest’s only free public beach, offering safe swimming in a buoy-marked area of the Danube. Open daily—typically from late June through August—the beach features lifeguards, supervised swimming zones, showers, toilets, changing cabins, sun loungers, baby-changing areas, and free drinking water. Water quality is monitored daily, and the beach may close temporarily if conditions are unsafe. While the shoreline is mostly pebbly and natural, the shallow water makes it suitable for families, and the calm river current adds to its appeal.
Accessibility is a strong point at Roman Beach. It’s reachable by bike paths, buses, the suburban railway (HÉV), and even by boat via Danube ferry services. Bike racks and limited street parking are also available nearby. The beach is free to use, making it a great option for locals and visitors alike who want a low-key day by the water. Water shoes are recommended, as the pebbly shore and exposed stones can get hot underfoot. Roman Beach offers a unique blend of nature and urban leisure—a laid-back way to cool off and experience Budapest from a different angle.
