Description
Koh Samet is a small tropical island located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Bangkok, making it one of the most accessible beach destinations for city dwellers. The island is part of the Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park and is known for its pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. The island's relatively dry climate, with minimal rainfall year-round, makes it an ideal spot for quick getaways from the capital. Upon arrival, visitors are required to pay a 200 THB entry fee as the entire island is designated as a national park.
The beaches on Koh Samet are characterized by fine white sand and clear blue ocean waters. Notable beaches include Hat Sai Kaew (Diamond Beach), Ao Phai, Ao Wong Duen, and Ao Phrao. Hat Sai Kaew is the longest and most popular beach, offering a variety of amenities such as restaurants, bars, and accommodations. Ao Phai and Ao Wong Duen provide a more relaxed atmosphere, suitable for swimming and sunbathing. Ao Phrao, located on the western coast, is quieter and more secluded, popular among those seeking a peaceful retreat.
Accessibility on the island is facilitated by a network of songthaews (pickup truck taxis) that operate as public transport, with fares ranging from 20 to 100 THB per person, depending on the destination. These vehicles are the primary mode of transportation on the island, as road traffic is limited to preserve the environment. Visitors can also walk between beaches, enjoying the scenic coastal views. While the island offers a range of accommodations and dining options, it's advisable to book in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability and secure the best rates.
