Description

The Saadian Tombs are a historic burial site located in Marrakech, dating back to the Saadian dynasty in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Rediscovered in 1917 after being hidden for centuries, the tombs are famed for their intricate Islamic architecture, elaborate tilework, and detailed stucco carvings. They serve as the final resting place for members of the Saadian royal family, including Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur and his relatives.

The tomb complex features several mausoleums set within a peaceful garden courtyard, with beautifully decorated chambers showcasing ornate mosaics, carved cedarwood ceilings, and marble columns. The most prominent chamber houses the tombs of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur’s sons, known for their striking craftsmanship and rich historical significance. The site reflects the artistic and cultural achievements of the Saadian era and provides insight into Morocco’s royal history.

Visitors to the Saadian Tombs pay a modest entrance fee, and the site is open daily, typically from morning until late afternoon. It’s advisable to visit earlier in the day to avoid crowds, especially during peak tourist seasons. The tombs are located near the Kasbah district and close to other Marrakech landmarks like the El Badi Palace, making it a convenient stop on a historical tour of the city. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to uneven surfaces, and respectful behaviour is expected, as the site remains a place of reverence.
