Description
Waimea Canyon, often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," is one of Hawaiʻi’s most stunning natural landmarks. Stretching about 14 miles long and up to 3,600 feet deep, the canyon displays vibrant red and green colours, layered rock formations, and dramatic cliffs formed over millions of years. It was created through volcanic activity and erosion by the Waimea River, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the island's geological history.
The park features several scenic lookouts, including the Waimea Canyon Lookout along Waimea Canyon Drive, which provides breath-taking views of the canyon and the 800-foot Waipo’o Falls. Another popular viewpoint is the Pu’u o Kila Lookout at the end of the drive, offering sweeping panoramas of the Napali Coast and the Pacific Ocean. These spots are perfect for photography and appreciating the vast natural beauty.
For those looking to explore more deeply, there are hiking trails such as the Canyon Trail leading to Waipo’o Falls and the Iliau Nature Loop, which highlights local plants and wildlife. The park is open daily during daylight hours and charges a $5 entry fee per person for non-residents. Parking is available for $10 per vehicle, granting access to both Waimea Canyon and the nearby Koke’e State Park. Hawaii residents can enter and park for free with valid state identification.
