Description
Pico de la Zarza is the highest point on the island of Fuerteventura, rising to 807 meters above sea level. Located on the Jandía Peninsula in the island’s southwest, the peak offers breath-taking panoramic views, especially of the remote and dramatic Cofete Beach on the Atlantic-facing coast. From the summit, visitors can also admire the contrast between the wild western cliffs and the more developed eastern shores of the island.
The most popular hiking route to Pico de la Zarza begins near the water reservoir above Morro Jable and follows the PR FV-54 trail. This round-trip trail spans roughly 13 kilometres, with a steady ascent of about 700 meters. It usually takes between four and five hours to complete, depending on fitness level and pace. The path is well-marked and relatively wide, making it suitable for hikers with moderate experience who are prepared for a bit of effort.
Because the trail is largely exposed with minimal shade, hikers are advised to start early to avoid the strong midday sun and to catch clearer views before potential cloud cover rolls in. It’s essential to bring plenty of water, wear appropriate footwear, and dress in layers due to changing temperatures at higher elevations. Despite the physical challenge, the reward at the summit—vast views over sea, sand, and volcanic peaks—makes this one of Fuerteventura’s most rewarding hikes.
