Description
Bath Abbey is a Grade I listed Gothic church located in the heart of Bath, England, with a history of Christian worship spanning over a thousand years. The current building, mainly constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries, replaced earlier Saxon and Norman churches on the site. The Abbey is famous for its stunning fan-vaulted ceilings and the Ladder of Angels, a unique stone carving on the West Front depicting angels ascending and descending to heaven.
In March 2023, Bath Abbey opened a new Discovery Centre beneath the church as part of the Footprint Project. This interactive heritage space allows visitors to explore the Abbey’s rich history through exhibits, videos, and artifacts, including medieval stone fragments and the Benefactors’ Book. The Discovery Centre enhances the visitor experience by making the Abbey’s history accessible to everyone.
Visitors can also take part in Tower Tours, climbing 212 steps to the top of the Abbey’s tower for close-up views of the clock and bells, as well as panoramic views over Bath. Private and romantic Tower Tours are available, often including celebratory drinks. As an active place of worship, Bath Abbey holds regular services and special events, so it’s best to check opening times and service schedules before visiting. Whether you’re drawn by its architectural beauty, history, or spiritual atmosphere, Bath Abbey offers a memorable experience.
