Description
The White Rabbit Gallery is a not‑for‑profit contemporary art institution in Chippendale, Sydney, established in 2009 to publicly showcase the private White Rabbit Collection largely comprising 21st‑century Chinese contemporary art Art Monthly. Founded by Australian philanthropist Judith Neilson, the collection emerged from her visits to China in the late 1990s, and since then it has expanded through regular acquisitions from China and Taiwan. Today, it houses approximately 2,500–3,000 works by around 700–750 artists and remains entirely funded by Neilson, with free admission for visitors.
The gallery occupies a beautifully restored 1940s Rolls‑Royce service depot, transformed into a four‑floor exhibition space by architect William Smart. As the collection is too large to display at once, the gallery mounts two major exhibitions per year, each featuring an entirely new rehang of works and typically lasting around five months. To accommodate installation, the gallery closes briefly, usually in February and August (or May and November, depending on scheduling).
Inside, visitors can enjoy each exhibition in a clean, light‑filled space that begins in a dramatic atrium and flows across multiple levels, with intimate side galleries that highlight both immersive installations and smaller works. A serene Tea House on the ground floor offers Chinese and Taiwanese teas, snacks, dumplings, and homemade sweets—a perfect spot to decompress after viewing Complemented by a stylish gift shop, the gallery experience is both visually stimulating and welcoming—a hidden gem in Sydney offering deep engagement with contemporary Chinese art.
