Description

Aghios Mammas, also spelled Agios Mamas, is a small, picturesque chapel located at the southernmost tip of Kos island, around 11 km south of Kefalos near Cape Krikelos. The whitewashed building with its signature blue dome stands peacefully against a backdrop of rugged hills, lush vegetation, and the deep blue Aegean Sea. Perched on a hillside overlooking secluded bays like Cavo Paradiso, the chapel offers a panoramic and serene view of Kos’s untouched southern coastline, making it a hidden gem for those seeking quiet beauty.

There is no ticket required to visit Aghios Mammas—the site is open to the public and completely free. While the chapel is usually locked, it opens during the annual celebration of Saint Mamas on the 28th and 29th of August, when locals gather for a small, traditional festival. Reaching the chapel involves navigating a rough, unpaved road in the final stretch, which can be challenging for standard rental cars. It's best suited for experienced drivers or those with vehicles equipped for gravel terrain, and caution is advised when driving.

Aghios Mammas is more than a religious site—it's a peaceful escape ideal for reflection, photography, and enjoying nature. The quiet surroundings and expansive sea views make it perfect for a scenic stop or picnic. Many visitors pair it with a trip to nearby Cavo Paradiso beach for a full day of exploration and relaxation. With its remote charm, spiritual significance, and breath-taking scenery, Aghios Mammas is a memorable and off-the-beaten-path experience on Kos.
