Built between 1949 and 1959, the basilica stands on the site where the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, known as the "Black Madonna," was believed to have been discovered by the indigenous Guanches before the Spanish conquest. Its striking architecture blends neoclassical and colonial styles, with a towering 45-meter-high bell tower that overlooks the scenic coastal town.
Inside the basilica, visitors are greeted by a richly adorned interior featuring stunning frescoes, intricate stained-glass windows, and religious artworks that depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the history of the Canary Islands. The centrepiece of the basilica is the revered statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, which is enshrined in the main altar. The church holds religious ceremonies and festivals throughout the year, with the most significant being the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria on February 2 and August 15, which attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the islands. Surrounding the basilica, the large Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias is adorned with statues of the Guanche kings, adding historical depth to the religious significance of the site.
Tourists visiting the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria will not only experience the spiritual and cultural heart of Tenerife but also enjoy the beauty of its coastal setting. The basilica's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean provides breath-taking views, making it a peaceful and reflective place to visit. Additionally, the town of Candelaria offers a variety of restaurants, shops, and local crafts, giving visitors a well-rounded cultural experience.
