Description
Colline du Château is a large public park situated on a hill right behind Nice’s Old Town. It offers lush gardens, shaded walking paths, ruins of the old castle (destroyed in the early 18th century), a waterfall, picnic areas, and a playground. The summit provides stunning panoramic views over the Baie des Anges, the Promenade des Anglais, Nice Port, and the rooftops of the city. It’s a peaceful natural retreat popular with locals and tourists alike, perfect for photography, relaxation, or escaping the busy streets while staying close to the city centre.
The park is open every day throughout the year, free to enter. From spring through early autumn (April to September), it is typically open from around 8:30 in the morning until 8:00 in the evening. During the cooler months (October to March), the closing time is earlier, usually around 6:00 PM. There is also a free elevator available that takes visitors from street level near the Old Town up to the main viewpoints, making it easier for those who want to avoid climbing stairs.
Visitors can reach the hilltop either by climbing several staircases from the Old Town or the Promenade des Anglais, or by taking the elevator. The climb takes about 10 to 15 minutes on foot, with some paths being steep, cobbled, or uneven, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to visit for cooler weather and fewer crowds. Bring water and sun protection in warmer months. Pets are welcome if kept on a leash. While the elevator improves accessibility, some parts of the park may not be suitable for wheelchairs or strollers due to the terrain.
