Description
The Akamas Peninsula, located in the northwest corner of Cyprus near Paphos, is a haven for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and those seeking untouched landscapes. Spanning approximately 230 square kilometres, this protected area boasts rugged coastlines, dense forests, and diverse wildlife, making it one of the island's most ecologically significant regions.
Key attractions include Avakas Gorge, a 2.5 km limestone canyon with towering rock walls and lush vegetation, offering a serene hiking experience. Lara Bay is a remote sandy beach and protected nesting site for endangered sea turtles, accessible by 4x4 vehicles and providing a tranquil setting. The Baths of Aphrodite, a freshwater grotto believed to be where the goddess Aphrodite bathed, serve as the starting point for several hiking trails. The Blue Lagoon and Fontana Amorosa, accessible by boat or 4x4, are azure coves ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and enjoying the coastal beauty.
The peninsula features several hiking trails, such as the Aphrodite Trail, a 7.5 km loop with dramatic coastal views and pine forests, the Adonis Trail, a more challenging loop with viewpoints toward Polis Bay, and the easier Smigies Nature Trail, perfect for birdwatching and spring wildflowers. Access is best by 4x4 vehicles, especially to reach remote areas, as facilities are limited. It is recommended to bring water, snacks, and sun protection, and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day in summer. Public transportation is limited, but organized jeep safaris and boat tours from nearby towns offer convenient access. The Akamas Peninsula is part of a European protected network, so visitors are encouraged to respect the environment and follow local guidelines.
