Description
Stradun, also known as Placa, is the main pedestrian street running through the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. This wide, limestone-paved boulevard stretches about 300 meters, connecting Pile Gate in the west to Ploče Gate in the east. It serves as the vibrant social and commercial centre of the city, lined with historic buildings, shops, cafés, and restaurants that create a lively atmosphere day and night.
Originally a marshy channel separating two settlements, Stradun was drained and paved in the 13th century to unify the city. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times, especially after the devastating earthquake in 1667. Today, Stradun is known for its distinctive smooth, polished limestone surface that gleams under the sun, making it a favourite gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Throughout the year, the street hosts various cultural events, parades, and festivals, adding to its dynamic character.
Stradun is open year-round and completely pedestrianized, allowing visitors to explore comfortably without traffic. It’s accessible at any time, with no entrance fee, and serves as the starting point for many walking tours of Dubrovnik’s historic sites. Whether enjoying a leisurely stroll, shopping for souvenirs, or dining al fresco, Stradun offers a quintessential Dubrovnik experience that captures the city’s charm and history.
